Search for “achievement medal” and you will get five different awards, because that is how many exist. Most people only ever hold one, so the confusion usually starts somewhere specific: a joint assignment, a rack being built for a spouse, or a family working out what a father earned before anyone wrote it down. Then […]
The Afghanistan Campaign Medal recognizes U.S. military service in Afghanistan during the War on Terror. The medal covers a campaign that lasted from September 11, 2001, through August 31, 2021. If you are building or updating a military ribbon rack, one detail matters more than most: the stars on the Afghanistan Campaign Medal represent campaign […]
If you recently looked for the Air Force Achievement Medal and found something called the Air and Space Achievement Medal instead, nothing has gone wrong. It is the same medal, with the same criteria and the same ribbon. Only the name changed. That single fact causes more confusion than anything else about this award, so […]
Yes. Thin ribbons are regulation-compliant across all U.S. military branches: Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, Space Force, and Coast Guard, as long as they display authorized awards in the correct order of precedence, with proper placement and accurate ribbon dimensions. What are thin ribbons? Thin ribbons are military ribbon racks built on a lower-profile […]
Some of the most demanding assignments in American military history carried no enemy fire. Service members held a line in the Balkans, flew relief into a famine, sealed a border, or stood up a hospital in the middle of an outbreak. The work was hard, the conditions were poor, and no shot was ever fired […]
The Army ribbon order of precedence tells you exactly where every ribbon belongs on your uniform. Inspectors, promotion boards, and ceremonies all judge your rack against it. This guide breaks the system down in plain English: which regulation controls the order, how the Army groups ribbons, and how to check your own rack in minutes. […]
The suit is hanging on the closet door. The box is on the dresser, the flat one with the hinge that sticks, and tomorrow is Veterans Day. For a lot of people, that is the moment the question finally comes up. It has been sitting quietly for years, and it usually sounds something like this: […]
For twenty years, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal stood among the most widely held awards in the United States military. Millions of service members earned it. Then, in September 2022, the rules changed, and many people still rely on the old criteria. This guide explains what the medal is, who qualifies for it […]
Every Soldier faces the same task after a new award comes through: rebuild the rack. If you searched for how to build a ribbon rack that Army boards and inspections will accept, this guide walks you through the full process. You will pull your official record, place every ribbon in the correct order of precedence, […]
After twenty or thirty years, you get one afternoon. The flag, the citation, the people who showed up, and a uniform you may never put on again. So it is worth getting the medals right. Fortunately, the rules are simpler than most people expect, and this guide walks through them in a few minutes. Quick […]
The Humanitarian Service Medal may be the most commonly earned and least often claimed award. A lot of that comes down to how it arrives. Nobody recommends you for it the way a commander recommends a commendation. A unit deploys after an earthquake, the work gets done, and everyone goes home. Paperwork catches up months […]
The Iraq Campaign Medal (ICM) recognizes qualifying U.S. military service in Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation New Dawn. If you are checking your military records or building a ribbon rack, three things matter most: eligibility, campaign stars, and order of wear. This guide covers the basics without making things more complicated than they […]
By the time someone reaches thirty years, the shelf is already full. Plaques from three commands. A drawer of unit coins. A framed print of an aircraft they stopped flying in 2009. So when a family starts looking at military retirement gift ideas, medals are rarely the first thought. They deserve to be. Here is […]
The National Defense Service Medal (NDSM) is a U.S. military service award established by President Eisenhower in 1953 to honor all honorable service during designated national emergencies. It has been issued for four major conflict periods – Korea, Vietnam, the 1990–91 Gulf War, and the post-9/11 war on terror – to millions of service members. […]
Of all the awards people ask us about, the NATO Medal produces more confusion than any other. Not because the rules are complicated, but because they are unusual, and because almost nothing about this award works the way another award works. Veterans write to us saying they earned three NATO Medals, and naturally they cannot […]
Military ribbons are an important part of every service member’s uniform. They represent dedication, service, achievements, and career milestones. Whether you have earned a few awards or a full rack of decorations, how those ribbons are displayed can make a big difference in your overall appearance. One of the most common questions military members ask […]
The ribbons on a Coast Guard uniform tell a story. But only if they’re in the right order. Every ribbon, every medal, every decoration on that uniform has a fixed position. It’s not decorative. It’s a system precise, regulated, and steeped in over 230 years of maritime history. Get the order wrong, and it shows. […]

Veterans Day falls on a Wednesday this year, 11 November 2026, and many people are quietly asking what to wear on Veterans Day. Somewhere this week, a veteran […]
If you are wondering why thin ribbons are increasingly preferred by military personnel, the answer comes down to appearance, comfort, and practicality. Thin ribbons have become a popular choice among active-duty service members and veterans because they offer the same authorized display of awards in a more streamlined format. As military professionals look for ways […]
