It is a quiet anniversary. No parade in most towns, no day off work, and very little on the evening news. Yet for the families who have served, and for the Airmen still serving, the date carries real weight. So we wanted to mark it properly this year, with a little history and a great deal of respect.

When Is the Air Force Birthday?
18 September. The date is fixed, so it does not move with the calendar.
President Truman signed the National Security Act on 26 July 1947. However, the law took effect on 18 September 1947, and on that day the Department of the Air Force came into being. W. Stuart Symington was sworn in as the first Secretary of the Air Force, and General Carl Spaatz became the first Chief of Staff.
That single date reorganized how the nation defends itself, and it gave generations of Airmen a service of their own.
How Old Is the U.S. Air Force in 2026?
Seventy-nine. Counting from 1947, the Air Force reaches 79 years on 18 September 2026, and it will turn 80 in 2027.
By comparison, the Army dates to 1775 and the Navy to 1775 as well, so the Air Force remains one of the younger services. Only the Space Force, established in 2019, is younger still.
Is Air Force Day the Same as the Air Force Birthday?
Today, yes, although the story behind that is worth knowing.
President Truman proclaimed Air Force Day while the Army Air Forces still existed, and it was observed on 1 August in 1945, 1946, and 1947. That date honored the Aeronautical Division of the Signal Corps, founded on 1 August 1907, which is where American military aviation truly began.
Once the Air Force became independent, however, the observance moved. Truman declared 18 September 1948 as Air Force Day and ordered flags flown at federal buildings, even though the date fell on a Saturday that year.
So the two names now point to the same day. If somebody searches for Air Force Day or for the Air Force birthday, they mean 18 September either way.
What Came Before 1947?
The Air Force didn’t appear out of nowhere. Rather, it grew through six earlier organizations across four decades, and every one of them left something behind.

How Can You Mark the Air Force Birthday?
None of these cost much. All of them mean something.
Call someone who served. A five-minute phone call on 18 September lands very differently from a post on a screen. Fathers, grandmothers, neighbors, old squadron mates.
Learn one story. Choose a unit, a campaign or an aircraft, then read about it for twenty minutes. Doolittle Raid. Berlin Airlift. Tuskegee Airmen. Operation Desert Storm.
Fly the flag. Simple, traditional, and still meaningful.
Say thank you in person. If you know an Airman, tell them plainly that their service mattered. Most will brush it off. Nearly all of them will remember it.
Put the uniform in order. For those still serving, or for a family display at home, the birthday is a natural moment to make sure the ribbons are current and correct.
