The Defense Superior Service Medal (DSSM) is the second-highest military decoration for the United States Department of Defense. This Medal is presented to the United States Armed force members who perform meritorious service in an exceptionally significant position. It is often awarded to General and Flag Officers. The Medal is silver-colored metal with blue enamel. The Medal depicts a bald eagle with stretched wings and a pentagon behind it. The eagle is encircled by a ring that consists of thirteen five-pointed stars around the top and side of the pentagon, and the bottom is surrounded by a silver wreath encircling the base on the left and an olive branch on the right.
